Max is gaining hands-on experience while completing his toolmaker’s apprenticeship at our food can factory in Coburg, Victoria.
“My role involves servicing and maintaining the tooling and machinery used in the production process.”
He was drawn to the role through his interest in engineering and problem solving, with early exposure to the trade through family.
“My dad is also a toolmaker, so I was exposed to the trade from a young age,” he said. “The role has provided a great opportunity for both personal and professional growth.”
Working alongside an experienced team has been a highlight, with a strong focus on learning and collaboration.
“Everyone’s always willing to share their knowledge,” he said. “I also enjoy being part of a strong team environment and working towards shared goals.”
“The team here is very supportive, productive and full of banter,” he said. “It creates an environment where everyone can work hard while still enjoying what they do.”
He’s worked on a range of different projects. Recently he machined shafts and pulleys that help move scrap along a conveyor belt, part of a wider project engineered by a graduate.
“It was rewarding to contribute to a project like that and see it built from the ground up,” he said.
His advice to others is to stay curious and make the most of the experience around them.
“Don’t be afraid to ask questions,” he said. “There’s a huge variety of work and a lot of experience throughout the site.”
Looking ahead, he is focused on continuing to build his skills and confidence.
“I’m looking forward to continuing to refine my skills as I work toward completing my apprenticeship,” he said.
