As Shift Manager at our board factory in Dandenong, Barry supports a team of around 100 team members. He is responsible for onboarding new team members, health and safety, resourcing his team, accounting and more.
Barry began his journey with Visy in 2009 in Perth, transitioning from a career as a chef to a casual. He progressed through operator roles and eventually took charge of the corrugator control room in one of Visy’s box facilities. In 2015, Barry relocated to Queensland to work at the Yatala site, before moving to Victoria in 2019 to join the team at Dandenong.
Barry enjoys that his career with us is dynamic, with plenty of opportunities to try new things.
“I’m always learning. It’s a job where you get out what you put in, I’m proof of that.”
He is excited at the opportunity to upskill through management courses and always puts his hand up for acting positions—such as Production Manager—to develop his leadership skills.
Helping his team to develop their skills is a motivator for Barry. He pairs new hires with experienced operators to learn from. This approach has been successful, with several team members hired by Barry going on to become lead operators, something he takes pride in telling people.
“It’s fulfilling to see the team grow and succeed.”
Barry was excited to be involved with a creative project to design and produce cardboard pallets during the Covid-19 pandemic. Barry’s team developed cardboard alternatives that could be delivered to customers and subsequently recycled and turned into new cardboard products.
This dynamic work, Barry says, is successful because of the diverse skills of his team at Dandenong.
“We run a wide range of board grades, flutes, and different paper grades. The team is skilled and runs lots of different machinery, including waxers, laminators and more.”
Barry is looking forward to continuing his leadership development and getting involved in strategic decision making. He is eager to learn more and continue growing and supporting his team to succeed.
