Bendigo Foodshare is the latest community organisation to benefit from Victoria’s Container Deposit Scheme (CDS Vic), receiving a total of $10,000 to support its vital food relief efforts including across communities recently impacted by bushfires.
The contribution includes more than $8,000 raised through container refunds, with an additional $2,000 donation from Visy’s Pratt Foundation to recognise the organisation’s ongoing support for vulnerable locals. Visy is the North Zone operator for Victoria’s Container Deposit Scheme and the Pratt Foundation is Visy’s Philanthropic arm.
Bendigo Foodshare plays a critical role in the region, supplying food relief to communities in need through it’s 90+ food partners. Recently, it has played a crucial role in supporting central Victorians affected by bushfires, ensuring access to food and other essentials.
Bendigo Foodshare accepts containers directly on-site via its donation bin, allowing locals to drive in, drop off containers and contribute to its mission. The containers are then returned through CDS Vic Depots in Kangaroo Flat and East Bendigo.
If you can’t return your containers to Bendigo Foodshare directly, you can still support them by returning your eligible drink containers at a CDS Vic refund point and selecting the charity as your payout option using the App.
Michelle Murphy, CEO Bendigo Foodshare says “The generosity of our community never ceases to amaze us. These funds come at a critical time, as many locals are still rebuilding after recent bushfires. Every container donated helps us put food on the table for families doing it tough, and we are incredibly grateful for the support of CDS Vic, Visy, the Pratt Foundation and our community.”
General Manager Container Deposit Scheme of CDS Vic North Zone operator Visy, Tim O’Donnell added “Victorians have embraced the Container Deposit Scheme with real enthusiasm, and Bendigo is a standout example of how powerful that community spirit can be. Turning containers into cash helps keep valuable materials out of landfill, while supporting local charities like Bendigo Foodshare to continue their important work.”
Across Greater Bendigo City Council, more than 80 million eligible drink containers have been returned though CDS Vic since the scheme launched in November 2023, equating to over $8 million back to pockets of Victorians.
