As Shift Maintenance Electrician at our cardboard facility in Truganina, Victoria, Jarrod handles all types of electrical matters across the site—from maintenance to upgrades and various housekeeping tasks. Every day, a major machine undergoes a planned maintenance stop, and Jarrod is part of the team that ensures the preventive work is completed.

Jarrod joined Visy as an apprentice, motivated by the chance to learn and grow.

“Visy, being a large company with countless opportunities, stuck out to me straight away.”

After four years as an apprentice, Jarrod transitioned to his current, full-time electrician role. He says that the maintenance team was very supportive.

“Throughout the apprenticeship, the support and knowledge from the team were there to aid my learning and understanding. This was a constant all the way up to my final exams and continues now.”

Jarrod enjoys working at Visy because every day is different.

“Finding solutions for new problems and working in a team environment make things enjoyable. Having the confidence to diagnose issues and see out the resolution gives me a sense of satisfaction. Projects and larger jobs are also great because they take a lot of planning and make you feel like you are working towards something bigger, especially when it involves more than just the resources and people from your own site.”

In 2023, Jarrod travelled to our newest cardboard site in Hemmant, Queensland, to help with the installation and commissioning of new machines. In 2024, he worked on installing a new specialty machine to produce our thermal insulation, Visycell. To get the required hands-on experience before starting those projects, Jarrod spent six weeks at our cardboard site in Coolaroo, Victoria.

He enjoys working closely with everyone in his team, which he says has been easy from the beginning.

“The team in the maintenance department has been fantastic to work with. Daily, we are coordinating work and helping each other on jobs. And being in the electrical field doesn’t limit me from working closely with the fitters and learning some of the mechanical side.”

Now that he’s fully qualified, Jarrod is excited about opportunities to specialise in certain areas, like learning more about PLCs (the industrial computers used in manufacturing) and programming. He’s also eager to work on a project to install a new corrugator line at a different Visy site, providing further opportunity for growth and development.

For anyone thinking of a career with Visy, Jarrod says there’s lots of opportunity and room to move.

“There are many experiences and positions for anyone wanting work and learn.”
